Sahm 5th Grade
Outdoor Program
Sleep under the stars, step outside your comfort zone, and spark connection and reflection. Each spring and fall, every 5th-grader enrolled in public and private school across Idaho has the opportunity to come to the Big Lost Campus for a three-day, two-night adventure that builds lasting bonds, teaches new skills, and helps students cultivate their "Inner BaseCamp" — their compass of core values to navigate life.

The program, generously funded by the Sahm Family Foundation and offered at no cost to schools, is designed to immerse students in nature while teaching them skills that last a lifetime. Over the course of their stay, they take part in outdoor adventures, STEAM-based lessons, team-building challenges, trust walks, mindfulness and movement practices, and campfire gatherings. Shared meals and time together deepen their sense of belonging, while new experiences encourage curiosity, responsibility, and resilience.

At its core, the 5th Grade Outdoor Program gives children the chance to explore, to face fears in a safe and supportive environment, and to discover a new confidence in themselves and their peers. Students don’t just learn about the natural world but learn how to trust, communicate, and grow through challenge.

“Taking my students to the outdoor adventure education program at BaseCamp every year is easily one of my favorite things about teaching 5th Grade… I’m a lifelong believer in the magic of what Idaho BaseCamp does for our youth.”
